Before the theme song was out, I was pretty certain that it would be another Kevin and Niki duet since they sang the theme for “Under the Canopy.” I loved the theme for “Canopy,” so I couldn’t wait to hear their next song, but when I found out that it was only a solo by Kevin, I was shocked and disappointed. I was still curious as to how the song sounded so once it was available online, I had to listen to it. As it turned out, it didn’t meet my expectations. Even worse was when I initially heard it, I didn’t like it. I felt that it was too slow and “boring.” However, after listening to it the whole day, it slowly warmed up to me. As I was listening, I read the lyrics and began to see it in a different light. I no longer “hated’ it. I found reasons to “like” it.
The Music
First of all, as we’ve heard numerous of times that this will be a “tragic” love story (at least KN’s storyline will be), I can understand why the song is slow. It wouldn’t make sense for it to be a cheerful song if something tragic happens, but I only wished it was slightly faster. More background instruments maybe? All I can hear is the violin and piano. There is a lack of percussion. There are some background vocals too, but it still sounds so “quiet.” I’ve heard comments that this song could put you to sleep. Some people even compared it to the (dreadful, IMO) “Life Art” theme. I actually think this song is A LOT better than LA’s theme. I’ve heard many sad songs before such as Michael Wong’s “Fairytale” and that song was excellent! The lyrics and music were wonderful. All I’m saying is the song could have been a little bit more exciting. I’m a bit disappointed in Mr. Tang Chi Wai this time. What happened? He’s the same composer of lots of wonderful TVB themes such as UTCOL, Heart of Greed, Brink of Law, The Last Breakthrough, and even Bernice’s hit “Truth.” It felt like he didn’t put a lot of effort in this composition.
The Lyrics
This is one of the redeeming factors of the song. I like the lyrics. I find the lyrics really meaningful and quite sad. I think it would go perfectly with Kevin and Niki’s storyline. I can picture Kevin’s character singing this song about Niki’s character. The song basically talks about how meeting this particular person (in this case Niki) was the best thing that ever happened to him and he would do anything to get her back. If you notice, the song is in past tense which leaves me to believe that this particular person is no longer around. I predict a sad ending for KN’s characters, especially with the last line of the song: “Spending my life’s fortune in order to meet you again.”
As you know, a theme song is very important to the series. It basically sets up the whole mood and summarizes what the series will be about. From the music to the lyrics, you can tell that this will be a tragic series. The reason why I think the theme is not a duet is because it’s more effective to have a solo as a theme for a tragic series. This song wouldn’t work or be as meaningful if it was a duet. A solo makes it seem more melancholic and lonely. *hint hint.*
Though this song wouldn’t be a chart topping hit, I hope you guys will give it a chance and appreciate it for its merits. I think more people will like the song after they watch TSD because they will understand it more clearly. I still hope and pray that there will be a sub theme, preferably a duet by Kevin and Niki because I find it weird that they don’t have a duet for this series, I mean with TVB trying to market them as a “Golden Couple” and all.

The Theme Song
September 4, 2007Song Title: 最美麗的第七天 (The Most Beautiful Seventh Day)
Singer: Kevin Cheng
作曲 (Composer): 鄧智偉
填詞 (Lyricist): 鄭櫻綸
Lyrics:
Repeat*
花一生的福氣為重遇你
